This website is the one-stop shop for information, resources and writing community. Writers can connect with other writers on our forum, visit our blogs and sign up for our free weekly e-newsletter. They’ll also find weekly writing prompts, contests and competitions, conference listings, and online exclusive articles. There is also a magazine they bring out called Writers Digest.

Organisations

Writers Victoria

The state-wide organisation that supports writers with workshops and free advocacy service. It currently has over 3,000 members.

The Wheeler Centre  

This organisation was established in 2010 when it became a UNESCO City of Literature. Each year a rich program of events are held to suit any reader or writer.

Festivals

Emerging Writers Festival

It is a not-for-profit organisation that prides itself for building foundations that support emerging writers. A staple of the festival is the 2-day Writers Conference held at Melbourne Town Hall. This conference has a wide-range of panels and workshops for writers about what is going on in the industry and issues in the community.

Melbourne Writers Festival

This festival is aimed more towards the readers and having a specific school program. The benefit with this festival is that it happens to get international writers to speak on their work.

Writing Tools

Scrivener

This is a program that lets you set out your document into sections. It allows you to import files into the program that you want to use for reference. The program allows you to create character bios, setting discriptions and much more. Cost: $40 AU, but has a 30-day free trial.


Hemingway Editor

This program lets you imput your writing and then highlights adverbs, long and complex sentences and passive voice phrases in different colours. It will also give you a grading of the basic literary level a person needs to have to understand what you are saying. Cost: Free – online or $8 AU to purchase the program.


Write or Die

This website lets you set your writing goal and your consequence and away you go.


Focus@Will

This program allows you to get music to listen to that will optimise your productivity. Cost: 30-day free trial.
