My home page is The Age website; tonight an article caught my eye that I had to click the link on to find out more, the article: Outrage as Smurfs called racist. The article is about how a french novelist and lecturer says that, “…the blue figures represent an “archetype of totalitarian society imbued with Stalinism and Nazism…”

The best summary I found was this video from The Hinterland Gazette, the best line of this happens at the end…. don’t want to spoil it but it is priceless!

Now to the issue – racism?

Firstly I’d like to point out that The Smurfs are a fictional series, based on magical little creatures called Elves. At what point did magic need to become politically correct?

According to Magic is:

the art of producing illusions as entertainment by theuse of sleight of hand, deceptive devices, etc.; legerdemain; conjuring: to pull a rabbit out of a hat by magic.

If magic is an illusion then from my view the novelisrt, Antoine Bueno believes that Hitler was an evil wizard wanted to get rid of blue blooded creatures.

They say that this view has emerged at the wrong time, with the release of the movie, The Smurfs is released in August in America. Here is the trailer:
